Grey Mangrove
(Avicennia marina var australasica)
The grain in this wood does not go one way only, but in fact goes in many directions. This wood is strong and solid and very hard to splinter. Great shields were made from this hardy timber.
There is a big seed on this tree which can’t be eaten raw. However, it can be injested after wrapping it in bark and encasing it in mud (or a termite nest) and then heating inside so the seed is steamed. Once it's cooked you must wash and soak the seed in fresh water for at least three hours. Finally, re-heat and enjoy.
